The pedagogical team

The dynamism of the institute is manifested through the activitý of 150 Ph.D. students, 90 Master’s students and a comparable number of post-doctoral researchers and foreign visitors. The Plinius Cursus doctoral program is the result of a true team effort. It evolves under the impulse of the teaching team and the proposals of the doctoral students themselves. The Plinius Cursus pedagogical team is composed of professors, assistant-professors, researchers, engineers, and technicians as well as Ph.D. students. It is organized in several committees:

  • The members of the office oversee the general management of Plinius Cursus.
  • The heads of each laboratory are the representatives of the doctoral program in your units. They are therefore your privileged contacts as well as those of your thesis directors.
  • The pedagogical branch managers oversee the management of the workshops and are the link between you and the trainers.
  • The trainers, who are either members of the institute with expertise in a particular technical or theoretical field, or external professionals, are in charge of the workshops or practical training.

History of the Plinius Cursus doctoral program

  • Since 2008, a working group (Tam Mignot, Éric Cascales, Jean-Michel Claverie) has been reorganizing the weekly seminar cycle at the IMM. Young researcher seminars are set up and allow each doctoral and post-doctoral student to present their work every week. At the same time, a dynamic policy of seminars for french and foreign guest researchers is being implemented.
  • In 2012, the technical seminars are instituted by Deborah Byrne-Kodjabachian. They allow the engineers and technicians of the institute to share their expertise with the entire scientific community.
  • In 2015, IMM students organized the first Young Researcher Meeting (JSM3), that allowed all doctoral students to present their thesis work in English, either as a talk or as a poster. This meeting became an annual event and every year, internationally renowned researchers are invited. Over the years, the conference has gradually opened to an increasing number of students from the University of Aix-Marseille, including those from BIAM. The apérotalks or seminars for dummies are jointly organized by and for PhD students.
  • In 2018, the Academy of Excellence of the University of Aix-Marseille (A*Midex) recognizes and funds the IMM doctoral program: the Ph.D. program Plinius Cursus, coordinated by Christophe Bernard, is thus created. The pedagogical team federates the different actions previously implemented around 4 objectives: interdisciplinarity, personalization of the program, professionalization, and internationalization. More than 15 workshops and practical training courses are created and offered to Ph.D. students.
  • In 2019, the Plinius Cursus becomes the doctoral program of the new IM2B institute, which includes 10 laboratories. The project is now jointly coordinated by Christophe Bernard and Éric Pilet. It offers more than 30 practical trainings and workshops delivered on the 4 campuses of the institute. Currently, the executive committee of the PhD program is composed of professors, researchers and engineers from all IM2B laboratories.
