In the framework of a Ph.D. Program, it is essential to give students the basics of management (team, project, collaboration), and teamwork, both in the academic and private sectors. The objective is to learn how to participate/create cohesion to induce performance within the team. This type of training is commonly practiced in the corporate world. The participants are put in a situation (alone or in small groups), do a personal assessment and are introduced to different managerial styles. Mr. Olivier Graille (Staff & Line Management) proposed this two-day intervention for the students of the PhD Program which is accompanied by the delivery of their “Personal Management Profile, Arc-en-Ciel DISC“.

The Plinius Cursus offers the “Management and team project leadership” workshop which provides keys to:

– Work in a group (know how to motivate and manage people, learn how to prioritize tasks and manage projects and teams, know how to anticipate or adapt)
– Transmit to one’s collaborators or to a group
– Learn the different management modes and the difference between public and private

At the end of the workshop the doctoral student will have acquired the essential management tools, discovered the different modes of functioning at work, and identified his or her management style. They will know how to adapt to different situations in order to lead and motivate a team, for cohesion and performance.

Timeline

Prior to the workshop, the participant is invited to fill out the “Arc-en-Ciel DISC Personal Profile” questionnaire, a tool that will help him/her discover his/her own and others’ work styles. During the two days, participants are trained to reflect on personal situations to propose practical cases, to practice simulation exercises to practice management practices, to adapt to different situations and to work in groups. At the end, each participant will debrief their personal management profile with the trainer.

Students prerequisites

  • Agreement of the thesis director
  • There is no prior acquisition necessary for students. Feedback from students is that this workshop is just as interesting at the beginning of a thesis to learn how to position oneself within a team as it is when approaching a post-doctoral position or for the corporate world.

Registration to the training

  • Possibility of offering another session if the number of interested students is too large.
  • Training can be given in English or French, depending on the audience concerned.
