Plinius Cursus back to school

As every year at this time of the year, new PhD students are welcomed in our laboratories. Plinius Cursus representatives from each laboratory will be presenting our PhD-program to them in the coming weeks. For 2nd or 3rd year students who feel the need to refresh their knowledge on our PhD-program, they can also attend this meeting. We would also like to remind you that engineers on fixed-term contracts and postdocs can attend our training courses. To do so, they should go to the programme website and contact their lab representative and Agnès Duclot so that they have access to the registration platform. Do not hesitate to contact Agnès Duclot so that she can add some members who are not on the mailing lists.

Focus on a course: « Scientific oral communication – Fake news »

The workshop will be held on 7 and 8 November 2022. Moderated by Yann Vacher

In the post-truth era, where mistrust of information has never been so great, “fake news” abounds. This training course enables you to spot them, to sort out facts from rumours and to acquire the reflexes to avoid being misled ? All these ingredients are reviewed to authenticate the veracity of the content. Through this practical workshop (workshop on creating false information, study of distribution channels), you will develop a methodological reading grid that will enable you to decode with certainty what is factual and what can sometimes be used for propaganda purposes.

**Focus on a course: « High-throughput Protein expression in E.coli »**

Problems with protein purification or lots of purifications in sight?

Led by Renaud Vincentelli and Marie-Line Garron, the workshop to be held on 21 and 22 November 2022 at the AFMB will solve your problems. It will allow you to use the state-of-the-art equipment of the AFMB’s IBiSA high-throughput protein purification facility on your own plasmids to optimise the purification of their recalcitrant proteins of interest. By the end of this course you will have acquired the ability to verify the production and purification of your samples and transfer the HTP purification to your laboratory. You will know how to design the best possible routes to have the maximum chance of getting your proteins purified in large quantities as quickly as possible.

What Next seminars

After Laurent Kodjabachian’s stimulating speech at the beginning of July, who presented the strategies to adopt in order to make a career in French academic research, we are inaugurating a new series of seminars in October where former doctoral students of the Institute will come to present their career path since their thesis. On 14 October, Eugénie Fournier, who defended her thesis in 2018, will present her career. After completing her thesis at BIP and Biosciences, she went to England as a VIE (Volontaire Internationale en Entreprise) at Sanofi. She has since joined Euroapi, still in the south of England, where she is a development scientist. Students who wish to do so will be able to discuss with her after the seminar.

Renewal of the JSM3 Committee

We salute once again the superb team that organised the IM2B student congress from 4 to 6 May 2022 and animated all the student life of the institute, including the famous apero-talks. Some of its members are entering the final stretch of their thesis (last manoeuvres, writing and defence). They must therefore pass on the baton. Maxime Bizet (BIP), Louis Delecourt (BIP-LISM), Rebecca Leblay (iSm2) and Romain Avellan (LISM), who were already part of the team last year, are continuing their involvement. They will need help to organise the next JSM3 congress in May 2023 and to animate the apero-talks. You can all take part in this adventure and, depending on your investment, you will be financially supported to participate in conferences or to visit your future employers. And former members will always be there to guide you. congrès ou aller visiter vos futurs employeurs. Et les anciens membres seront toujours présents pour vous guider.

A new representative for the iSm2

With Christophe Decroos leaving Marseille for new horizons, Alexandre Ciaccafava will take over as the Ph.D. programme representative for the iSm2.

Alexandre did his thesis on hydrogenase in the hyperthermophilic bacterium Aquifex aeolicus at BIP under the supervision of Elisabeth Lojou before joining Peter Hildebrandt’s group in Berlin for his Post-doc to study carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH). He joined the CNRS in 2018 as a CR at the CBMN in Bordeaux before joining iSM2 in early 2022. We are therefore all very happy to see him back in Marseille and participate in the Ph.D program.

Course completion certificates

The validation certificates of all courses that took place since March 2022 are now available in your personal space on the Plinius Cursus intranet. We are currently in the process of entering all courses that took place before March 2022. In order for these courses to be validated by your doctoral school, you do not need to send them as you go along. You can send them to your ED in one go when you plan to defend your thesis. If you are doing your thesis and some courses have not yet been integrated into your professional space, you can request the certificate by writing to the Ph.D. program: pliniuscursus@imm.cnrs.fr

La rentrée du Plinius Cursus

Comme tous les ans à cette période de l’année, de nouveaux doctorants sont accueillis dans nos laboratoires. Les représentants Plinius Cursus de chaque laboratoire vont être amenés dans les prochaines semaines à leur présenter notre programme de formation tout le long de la thèse. Pour les étudiants en 2^ème ou 3^ème année qui ressentiraient le besoin de rafraîchir leurs connaissances sur notre PhD-program, ils peuvent également assister à cette réunion. Nous vous rappelons aussi que les ingénieurs en CDD et Postdoc peuvent suivre nos formations. Pour cela ils/elles doivent aller sur le site du programme et contacter leur représentant labo ainsi que Agnès Duclot pour qu’ils aient accès à la plateforme d’inscription. N’hésitez pas à contacter Agnès Duclot pour qu’elle ajoute certains membres qui ne seraient pas sur les listes de diffusion.

À l’ère de la post-vérité, où la méfiance à l’égard des informations n’a jamais été aussi grande, les “fake news” abondent. Cette formation vous permet de les repérer, de faire le tri entre les faits et les rumeurs et d’acquérir les réflexes pour ne plus être abusé ? Tous ces ingrédients sont passés en revue pour authentifier la véracité du contenu. A travers cet atelier pratique (atelier de création de fausses informations, étude des canaux de diffusion), vous vous forgerez une grille de lecture méthodologique qui vous permettra de décoder avec certitude ce qui est factuel et ce qui peut parfois être utilisé à des fins de propagande.

**Zoom sur une formation : « High-throughput Protein expression in E.coli »**

Problème de purification de protéines ou beaucoup de purifications en vue ?

Animé par Renaud Vincentelli et Marie-Line Garron, l’atelier qui se tiendra les 21 et 22 novembre 2022 à l’AFMB va résoudre vos problèmes. Il vous permettra d’utiliser l’équipement de pointe de l’installation de purification des protéines à haut débit IBiSA de l’AFMB sur vos propres plasmides pour optimiser la purification de leurs protéines d’intérêt récalcitrantes. Vous aurez acquis à la fin de cette formation la capacité de vérifier la production et la purification de vos échantillons et de transférer la purification HTP dans son laboratoire. Vous saurez concevoir seul les meilleures voies possibles pour avoir le maximum de chances d’obtenir la purification de vos protéines en grandes quantités le plus rapidement possible.

What Next seminars

Après l’intervention stimulante de Laurent Kodjabachian début juillet, qui nous a présenté les stratégies à adopter pour faire carrière dans la recherche académique française, nous inaugurons en ce mois d’octobre une nouvelle série de séminaires où des anciens doctorants de l’institut viendront vous présenter leur parcours depuis leur thèse. Le 14 octobre, prochain Eugénie Fournier, qui a soutenu sa thèse en 2018, vous présentera son parcours. Après sa thèse réalisée entre les laboratoires BIP et Biosciences, elle est partie en Angleterre comme VIE (Volontaire Internationale en Entreprise) chez Sanofi. Depuis elle a rejoint l’entreprise Euroapi, toujours dans le sud de l’Angleterre, où elle est development scientist. Les étudiants qui le souhaitent pourront discuter avec elle après le séminaire.

Renouvellement du comité des JSM3

Nous saluons une nouvelle fois la superbe équipe qui a organisé le congrès des étudiants de l’IM2B du 4 au 6 mai 2022 et animé toute la vie étudiante de l’institut dont les fameux les apéro-talks. Certains de ses membres entament la dernière ligne droite de leur thèse (dernières manips, rédaction et défense). Ils doivent donc passer la main. Maxime Bizet (BIP), Louis Delecourt (BIP-LISM), Rebecca Leblay (iSm2) et Romain Avellan (LISM) qui étaient déjà dans l’équipe l’an dernier, poursuivent leur investissement. Ils auront besoin d’aide pour organiser le prochain congrès JSM3 en mai 2023 et animé les apéro-talks. Vous pouvez toutes et tous participé à cette aventure et en fonction de votre investissement, vous serez financièrement aidés pour participer à des congrès ou aller visiter vos futurs employeurs. Et les anciens membres seront toujours présents pour vous guider.

Un nouveau représentant pour l’iSm2

Christophe Decroos quittant Marseille pour de nouveaux cieux, Alexandre Ciaccafava prendra la relève en tant que représentant du Ph.D program pour l’iSm2.

Alexandre a effectué sa thèse sur l’hydrogénase de la bactérie hyperthermophile Aquifex aeolicus au BIP sous la supervision d’Elisabeth Lojou avant de rejoindre pour son Post-doc le groupe de Peter Hildebrandt à Berlin afin d’étudier la monoxyde de carbone déshydrogénase (CODH). Il a intégré le CNRS en 2018 en tant que CR au CBMN à Bordeaux avant de rejoindre l’iSM2 en début d’année 2022. Nous sommes donc tous très heureux de le revoir à Marseille et participer au Ph.D program.

Les certificats de validations de toutes les formations ayant eu lieu depuis mars 2022 sont désormais accessibles dans votre espace personnel sur l’intranet du Plinius Cursus. Nous sommes actuellement en train de rentrer toutes les formations qui ont eu lieu avant mars 2022. Pour que ces formations soient validées par votre école doctorale, vous n’avez pas besoin de les envoyer au fur et à mesure. Vous pouvez les fournir à votre ED d’un seul coup lorsque vous projetez de soutenir votre thèse. Si vous passez votre thèse et que certaines formations n’ont pas encore été intégrées à votre espace professionnel, vous pouvez demander le certificat en écrivant au Ph.D. program : pliniuscursus@imm.cnrs.fr
